I am a drama student in London and I am looking for my first professional role on stage. Any advice?

I am looking for experience on stage and because I have no previous experience it seems impossible to find castings in London( I don't qualify for equity/spotlight due to lack of experience). Any tips?I am a drama student in London and I am looking for my first professional role on stage. Any advice?
You're probably going to find things a lot easier with an agent.I am a drama student in London and I am looking for my first professional role on stage. Any advice?
Local community theatre. Not repertory to start with, but certainly that's a goal you could aim towards. Traditional rep theatres run a play a week, kind of thing.

  • What type of advice can a lawyer give during a custody suit?

What is advice and what is coaching? and is coaching legal?

The term(coaching) is being thrown around by counselors ,etc and I don't know what it isWhat type of advice can a lawyer give during a custody suit?
If by coaching, you mean helping a child prepare for what the custody process will be like, and how to phrase things, no that's not illegal.

If by coaching, you mean telling the child to say things that aren't true, that's illegal.

Lawyers coach witnesses all the time; it's good legal strategy. Suborning perjury is unethical and illegal. What type of advice can a lawyer give during a custody suit?
I think what they probably are referring to is ';coaching'; the child about what to say about whom they want to live with. For example, coaching a child to say daddy is mean or mommy drinks every night.

It's not proper to coach a child that way, and if the court believes the child has been coached, it is going to be considered against the parent who did the coaching.
You have to ask a lawyer not children looking for fast points

My Dog has a flatulence problem and we need some advice?

Bobbie is 12 years old and flatates very often. Our neighbors have been complaining and it has not been pleasent to us as well. We love that old dog but the odor is awful what should we do?My Dog has a flatulence problem and we need some advice?
oops i accidentally pressed the report button

SORRY SORRYMy Dog has a flatulence problem and we need some advice?
change its dog food to another brand
    how do your neighbors know?

feed your dog a high quality dry kibble only, that is formualted for older dogs ( easily digestible)
It could be the food, quality of food, or caused by impacted anal glands. I usually take my dog to a groomer or to a vet to get the fluid released from them.

    ';Your dog's anal glands may be the culprit of rear-end woes. Impacted anal glands cause noxious odours and discomfort. It is a good idea to have them checked every time you are at the vet's, just in case, or your groomer will be able to help also. If these are a frequent problem, have either your vet or your groomer instruct you in expressing the glands at home on your own.';

    http://dogs.about.com/cs/generalcare/a/f鈥?/a>
Most likely the probable cause is the diet, it means that whatever he's been eating can't be digested properly. It could cause some discomfort to your dog. Have you been changing the diet recently? Steer away from foods that contains carbohydrates and dairy (lactose). In addition, does your dog eat too fast? Sometimes this could also be the cause.

If the problem persist and you it is unbearable to you, try purchasing anti-gas remedy from the vet or pet store.

    Good luck!!!
Everyboby farts so don't be worried that it might be life threatening. Just like if it were you, get it checked out. In the mean time, I would try to spray alot of air freshener around.

Does anyone have advice on getting a novel published?

Should I go through a literary agent first? How can I get my 'foot in the door'?Does anyone have advice on getting a novel published?
Getting your foot in the literary door involves having an excellent novel, polished and ready for sale, and on contacting the right person with an excellent query letter.

Not every legitimate sale requires an agent. Many small publishers still deal directly with the author. Once you have a completed, polished manuscript, you can figure out if you should seek a big ';name brand'; publisher, in which case you need an agent, or if a small publisher will do just fine.

You can find publishers in the most recent edition of Writer’s Market (US) or Writers’ %26amp; Artists’ Yearbook (UK). Each listing will indicate “agented submissions only” or not.

Remember, reputable agents charge the author NOTHING up-front. Some agents may deduct the costs of doing business (copies, mail, phone) from your first check, but nobody legitimate needs that in order to get started.

You can determine whether an agent is reputable at sites like Preditors and Editors (http://www.invirtuo.cc/prededitors/) and the AAR (http://www.aar-online.org/mc/page.do). Besides being a real agent and not a scammer preying on writers’ dreams, you also want to research an agent’s recent sales of books in your genre before sending a query letter.

Researching whether a publisher is the real deal is easier. Go to a bookstore. See any of their books? Good. No? If it’s a small press, it might still be legitimate. The biggie is that no publisher needs money from the author. None at all. Any publisher who does is cause to run the other way.

Kindly ignore anyone who urges you to self-publish, unless your dream is to sell copies to your family and friends and nobody else.Does anyone have advice on getting a novel published?
Aim high. Start by trying to land an agent. Only with an agent can you break into the major publishing houses.

For a list of reputable agents, see http://QueryTracker.net

There is also an introductory article about writing query letters: http://querytracker.net/howto.php

If the agent path doesn't work out, then try publishers who do not require agents (these are usually the smaller houses.)

I would recommend against any publisher that asks you to pay for all or part of the printing yourself. And never pay an agent or publisher any reading or editing fees.
Get some contacts and do a lot of networking. Otherwise, you can forget it. It's about as easy as getting into the movies.

Anyone have any advice on house training a 5 year old dog?

She's a chihuahua mix and I've had her since she was a puppy. She goes inside sometimes (not all the time and only urine). I want to solve this problem once and for all.Anyone have any advice on house training a 5 year old dog?
A dog can learn different routines at any age, try this:

Management is the most effective tool you have. Baby gates or a playpen to keep puppy in the same room you are in, or leash her to your chair or belt so she can't ever be more than a leash length away at any time. If you do not see her, she’s probably going potty. If you have to answer the phone or make dinner, put her in her crate or a playpen in the room you are in. By confining her to a small place, like an airline kennel, you will teach her to wait to be let out. She will be more reluctant to soil her crate, because if she does she will be forced to sit and look at it and smell it until you return. When you do let her out, take her directly to her assigned toilet area and praise for quick results. Take her outside( or to her assigned toilet area) on an unfailingly regular schedule - every hour on the hour and make every outing a party with cheering and cookies. Remember, this is not forever, just until she is housetrained.

Watch your dog constantly. One of your first duties is to identify what your dog does right before she eliminates. Does your dog sniff? Circle? Pause mid step / ear twitch / sniffing pattern, hold her ears in a certain position? Some dogs provide signals that are easy to spot, while others are more difficult. Watch carefully. Just as the dog begins to show signs, you can redirect (shake a rattle can to stop the potty action then pick up your pet and head outside-or to the potty area) and respond with enthusiasm, to go OUTSIDE (or on the pad). Once outside, stay with her until you witness the desired results and praise her as she goes. ';Good, go potty outside!'; Make her feel that she is the most special dog in the whole world. STAY with them until they go.

If you don't stay, you'll miss the chance to praise and you'll also miss the chance to name the behavior. ';Outside'; is where she needs to go, ';Go potty';, ';Find a tree';, or, ';Do your business'; (call it what you like) is what she needs to do when she gets there. If you stay with her, you'll also know for a fact that both duties were accomplished before she comes back in. Many young puppies are distraught about being separated from their owners. They may spend the entire time while outside just sitting on the porch. It's unlikely that your pup will want to ask to go outside if it is a negative experience to be separated from the security of its family.

Feed and exercise on a regular schedule. Remember, what goes in regularly, will come out regularly. How soon after she eats does she need to go out? Keep track, usually within an hour. Free-choice feeding may hamper your house training efforts - what trickles in will trickle out unpredictably! Your dog will probably need to go out immediately upon waking in the morning, soon after eating, after napping, and after exercising. If you can anticipate when she needs to go and hustle her to the appropriate spot at the first sign, you'll avoid accidents.

Potty pads are one more step to get rid of if the ultimate goal is to get your pup to go outside, so if you must have an indoor toileting area in the interim, try a low sided tray with a piece of sod or dirt - copy the surface of the intended outside target. At first, keep your puppy in a small area like the kitchen and cover the entire floor with pads. There can be NO MISTAKES!! Then slowly remove all the pads except in the exact area you want them to go on. You can also move the tray closer and closer to the outside door, until one day it’s on the other side. Use the above method to direct the pup to the “correct” pad area. In the long run, having an indoor potty area will slow down the process of getting the pup to go outside, so avoid it if you can.

If your puppy has already soiled on the carpet or floor, it is imperative that you get a good enzyme cleaner to rid the area of any smell, remember your dog can smell what you can not, and that odor triggers the elimination response. Make sure you are neutralizing odor on all the spots they use. Fresh spots will respond to white vinegar, but if a spot has dried before treatment, you need a bacterial enzyme odor eliminator product such as Nature's Miracle. Either way, the product needs to soak deeply into the carpet pad. If she has an accident, swat yourself with the rolled up newspaper, not the dog. It was your fault for not watching her closely enough! Rubbing her nose in it (yuck!), scolding or hitting will only teach her to avoid you when she feels the need, rather than come find you. Scolding the dog only teaches the dog to sneak off down the hall where you won't see her. Remember, she loves you and wants to do what is right, she just doesn’t know what that is yet.

    Summary:

    1. Never leave a puppy unattended. A Puppy you can not see is eliminating in the wrong place. Use play pens, leashing the dog to your belt, or a kennel to help contain your puppy.

    2. Kennels or crates should be large enough for the animal to stand up, turn around and lay back down. If the dog can walk or step in the crate, they will eliminate in it. Never leave a puppy in the crate more than the recommended time.

    3. SCHEDULE. Take the puppy out for elimination first thing in the morning, then about 45 minutes after scheduled meals, last thing at night, after napping and after exercise.

    4. Watch for elimination signals from the puppy.

    5. When you take the puppy to the elimination area, take her directly to her assigned toilet area and praise for quick results.

    6. Stay with your puppy to avoid separation anxiety, ensure she does all she is suppose to do, and gets praised quickly for the correct results.

    7. Be sure to name the activity so later your dog will eliminate on command

    8. If your puppy has already soiled on the carpet or floor, it is imperative that you get a good enzyme cleaner to rid the area of any smell. Any smell left will trigger the pup to go again. Natures Miracle or a similar enzyme cleaner is the most effective. Rubbing her nose in it (yuck!), scolding or hitting will only teach her that you can not be a leader (you are pretty stupid if you think don’t want anyone to ever go potty), she will learn to hide her elimination, she will learn to worry about you when you leave the room, because when your return, you are angry,,,so you have just increased separation anxietyAnyone have any advice on house training a 5 year old dog?
just make sure you never scold her for it it will confuse her and make her believe that she didn't do a good enough job and next time she does it she will try and do a bigger poo or more wee as she thinks that is why you got angry
show her her mistake talk gently but firmly. get help from a dog trainer if necessary. if she does the right thing and urines outside, praise her.
she might just have a weak bladder. try a doggie door if you dont already have one
POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT!!!! praise when she goes outside rather that yelling when in..
................. she's 5 not a puppy anymore.. umm i dont think you can train her. but umm ...........!!!!!!!! get puppy mats she'll urine on those and poop
Show her what she did, scold her and then throw her outside. My puppy has been trained since about 9 weeks old!
Crate train her. If she's unattended or you're not home, then she goes in the crate.

If you catch her having an accident, yell and clap your hands to stop her and take her outside.

Anyone have any advice how i can calm my anxiety about my girlfriend at college?

We are on a break and even though we both say were not gonna get serious with other people i always worry she is getting knocked up alot. Any strategies to ease the anxiety?Anyone have any advice how i can calm my anxiety about my girlfriend at college?
From the sound of it, you're an insecure guy. You need to let this girl go man. I guarantee there's several guys who are going to be mashing her guts up at college. She's fresh meat and some young studs are going to mount it and pound it like you could only dream about. Of course, she's probably sick of your pansy ways and wants it hard and long from some guys who know what time it is, so rest easy knowing you made the right choice to leave her. After several guys have run up in there you wouldn't want leftovers anyway.Anyone have any advice how i can calm my anxiety about my girlfriend at college?
knocked up a lot? like pregnant?

people are talking to her?? thats probably going on. you cannot expect her to not to talk to anyone.

my advice -- if you were supposed to be together, etc then it WILL WORK OUT. sometimes separations make people closer because they realize that they really love each other. you should also talk to other people... it will give you a new perspective

Does anyone have advice on how to help a hamster adjust to an owner?

I bought a new hamster not long ago. Since I brought him home, my dad has been sneaking into my room when I'm asleep or not around in order to play with him. (I just learned this tonight.) Because of this, the hamster won't let me near him, but loves my dad, and gets defensive whenever I try to change his food or take him out for his daily exercise.Does anyone have advice on how to help a hamster adjust to an owner?
Spend more time with your hamster, give him treats and handle him frequently, let him get used to your scent. Its very normal for a hamster to be solitary so recently after being brought to a new home, let your hamster adjust, and tell your dad to limit the bonding. Remind him that it's your hamster.Does anyone have advice on how to help a hamster adjust to an owner?
Well i would ask you dad if you can also play with your hammie when he is. This may allow him to realize that you are safe! If your dad gently places him on you or in your hands, he knows that your dad trusts you so why cant he. If this doesnt work, then just work with your hammie! Im sure that your hammie will see that you are the one who is caring for you and cleans his cage and keeps you safe!

Good luck and Hope this helps!
put your hand in his/her cage and let your hamster smell you and get used to you. eventually, he/she will let you pick them up, but always be gentle. you want to let your hamster know that you mean no harm.
Sit in an empty tub with the hamster after ';hamster proofing'; the bathroom and let him run around.

Can anyone offer advice on the best acne treatments available?

Hi there. I just got back from a visit to my GP, who has diagnosed me with Acne Vulgaris. He's sending me to see a specialist and says i'll probably be put on Roaccutane. I have friends who have had this treatment and their skin has been left scarred as a result. There are also hundreds of very nasty side effects. Can ANYONE please let me know if there is anything more effective out there. I am so depressed. Please help if you can.

    Many thanks,

First of all, no one has flawless skin. Some people have it better than others, but thats just genes and stuff. Go to www.freewebs .com/reelbeauty11 for skin and beauty tips. I know its for young girls, but it works for anyone!

I know some people who have tried ProActive and it worked, but I also know some others who have tried it and it made it worse :( I know some who have put rubbing alchol on their skin or peroxcide to dry up the pimples. It also kills bacteria :) . Also, try going to a dermotoligist, or ask your regular doctor. Often times the regular doctor, who knows more about your med. history and whatnot can help you more than a dermatologist.

are you a vegetarian? That might have something to do with it. Its worth checking into.

Try dabbing toothpaste or honey on your zits before you go to bed - works wonders.

Overall, remember that beauty counts more on the inside than on the outside, and your true friends will love you for you, and not your skin.

Oh, and try a different kind of foundation, if you wear it. Try to use a kind with lots of water in it. It looks great and doesn't clog pores half as bad. And check your habits - do you prop your chin up a lot with your hands? That might cause the acne as well. Look for the cause, as well as the cure.
Years ago I was also diagnosed with Acne Vulgaris, which is a mild form of acne and you really don't need to see a specialist for that just a dermatologist. Get recommendations from friends or family members who have been to see a dermatologist. A clear topical solution-can't remember the name of it- was prescribed by my dermatologist it worked wonderfully, the acne returned but not as bad as it was before my face is free from acne. I now use Clearasil 3 times a day and moisturize with Mary Kay Timewise age fighting. As to what will be prescribed for you that is left to the dermatologist.
The natural acne cure discussed below may be worth a shot, before trying something more drastic.
You need to get the mucky water out of your system, what worked for me was as much good hard shagging as often as 5 times a day more if youcan manage it, works wonders believe me.
i know this sounds gross but my mum used to use our wet nappys on our faces when we were young now me an my sister never get spots so my sister had her son pee on a towel an wipe his face with it in 3 weeks his acne had gone so all i can say is try it no one is going to know but you
There are a variety of ways to treat acne and many acne sufferers have found that the natural types of acne treatments can be effective at helping to stop your acne and no negative side effects.Log on to http://tipsfromruby-acne.blogspot.com/ for a few home made tips to heal acne .
I got my first zit when I was eleven and then went on to have acne for years. To this day I still get the odd spots and blemish. Over the years, I tried many things. Depending on your age, you will probably find that this is hormonal. However, I have found the Clinique anti blemish range to be great. It is a bit pricey, but it really helps to keep spots at bay. When I was younger, I used Oxipads. These can dry the skin, but did help to keep the spots away. You could maybe try these for a month and see how you get on. You need to be careful with some of the other products in the market as they can contain agents which dry out the skin too much, cause the production of more oil and then more spots. You need to be careful about some of the topical solutions that you get from the GP as well as these can cause redness of the skin (since they are quite harsh and dry the skin). Clinique do an anti-blemish gel and it really drys the spots up. Remember though, if you are using a gel to dry the spots, you will need a good moisturiser. Have a look at their website. After years of trying and testing almost every spot cream on the market, I have found this to be one of the best. You can even go into one of the department stores and speak to one of the assistants. I cleanse my face at night, moisturise and then get the zit cream on. It's great and zits are gone almost overnight.
Charlotte, the adverse reactions are incredible. One of the posters on the board today was complaining about a lot of hair loss caused by the drug.

Here's an article on Associated Content that shows how bad Accutane it, even according to Roche's own studies.

There's one alternative that you probably haven't tried. All you need is cold processed honey, baking soda, oats and coconut oil. Studies from the National Library of Medicine web site are used to back this up and links are provided to those studies in the article. It really does work and the studies prove it.

What is the job market like? Where should I research demographics? Those who have relocated there recently, do you like it?

My biggest concern is finding secure employment, I figure everything else will come together once I have an anchor (job) in place. With that said, how should I market my resume and/or cover letter to reflect relocation? What is your advice on moving to Atlanta?
I've lived in the Atlanta area for over 15 years. I would not want to discourage you, however, PLEASE make sure you have a job WAITING for you. Keep in mind that the area is full of degree-holding, well educated, well connected individuals. The job market is about the same as any other greater metropolitan area. Seek and you shall find, but being chosen is what you want.

    Demographics - check http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en

you can find good info. on their website.

I like the area, although my move was made many yrs. ago. The party-people and club-goers REALLY like it. I would love it, however, if I had more money to enjoy all that it has to offer, and it does have a lot to offer. There's always a show (play, movie, concert, etc.) to go to, or a restaurant you haven't tried, or places to meet people with similar interests to your own.

You truly have to keep a positive attitude, even if the Ataliens don't. But I guess that's no matter where you live. Also, when one of my closest relatives expressed an interest in moving to the Atlanta area, I told her, ';it's not easy to live here';. She didn't, and I have to say I think she made the right decision. And I would have LOVED to have her near me.

And one last thing (I don't know if you are married - but), seeing and having heard the many horror stories, I would NOT move here if I was married.

Best wishesWhat is your advice on moving to Atlanta?

  • I need your advice-is it possible to keep a dog that bites with small kids in the house?

We have a wonderful dog-we got him as a puppy and he is three now. He is a shepherd mix. LOVES people. Never an accident in the house. We didn't realize when we got him that he is completely anxious and cannot relax if there is anyone outside of the fmaily in the hosue or yard. Plus, there have been two biting incidents with kids but ONLY when food was directly involved.

I knwo it sounds insane, especially since the latest bite was my older daughter, but is there a way we can keep this dog? I am thinking of obvious things like feeding him separately, crating him when company is over (especially kids), putting a dog door and heater in the garage for him when kids are over. Basically I am looking for suggestions, I don't want to play fast and loose with a biting risk, I don't want to be sued, but I made a committment to this dog, not knowing he was too much dog for us. I feel, at age 3, he will only get more mellow. My husband, so far, is not yielding on keeping him.I need your advice-is it possible to keep a dog that bites with small kids in the house?
If you think you can handle it but remember what is at stake. Your children. You are right who else would want a dog that bites. You already failed the commitment to this dog by allowing him to become this way. They don't ususally get ';more mellow'; they age and get agitated.

Anything an ANIMAL does in your care is because YOU allowed it. If it sh*ts in the kitchen everyday its because you let it. If it nips the neighborhood kids is because you have allowed it. If your dog pulls on lead it is because you have allowed it. If your dog gets in the trash its because you allowed it. Is there anything else?I need your advice-is it possible to keep a dog that bites with small kids in the house?
Talk to your vet. They do have medicines that can be used as calming agents. Your idea's are also good.. Always feed your dog seperately. My dogs dont bite but I do crate them when I have company over simply because I realize that not everyone appreciates all the love that my dogs want to share, but this keeps my dogs safe and my company happy as well. Good luck !
You do not necessarily have to get rid of the dog. Proper dominance training and familiarizing your children with the dog can reduce your chances of an attack. Also the dog does not seem to be very aggressive. The dog does is not attacking, only warning. Modifying you and your children's behavior could remove the chance completely. I suggest going to a professional dog trainer to see what he/she thinks. A good dog trainer usually trains the human more than the dog anyway. Good luck.
i understand your pain....keep him with kids in the house....or get rid of him with the risk of him being put down....i ALWAYS tell people who get one of our puppies that if anything should happen and your no longer able to care for this dog bring it back no questions asked and we will refund your money...now where im sure you'd just be looking for a home with no charge...i would find someone who is older....no kids, possibly stays at home...or is at least home most of the day...if you can't bring yourself to find him a new home then i would most deffinetly crate or garage him when others are in the house...we built a dog run so our dogs can still be outside or in their dog house but we can have the kids in the rest of the yard and no worries about whats happening when we are not looking...you could also work with him...if you can find a fake hand and stuff it with pillow fluff duct tape it to the end of broom and when he is eating stick the fake hand in the dish and pet him with it...good luck!!!
Come back and ask this question when half of your kid's face is missing, and reconstructive surgery makes her look like the Phantom of the Opera.

Kids are more important than your dog.
Well this is hard, I really feel for you and your dog.

The majority of dog bites occur because of fear and anxiety on the behalf of the dog actually, rather than full on agression.

Even though he sounds like he is at the lower end of the scale for danger, he's still on that scale, and unfortunately I think that keeping a dog with a history of anxiety or food related nipping is an unacceptable risk, moreso because he is a big dog with big teeth.

Rehousing him with another responsible pet owner who does NOT have children would be far better for you and the dog than possibly having him nip someone else, cause major damage, and have him forced to be put down because the parents insist.

I understand your reluctance to ';give up'; on him when you've made a committment to him, but I don't view rehousing him as giving up, I view it as making the best decision all round for everyone. Once he adjusts to a new owner, he'll feel far less anxious in an environment that suits him better, and if you are lucky you could find someone who will allow you to visit him (lol...access visits with your dog...hee hee).

Crating during company and keeping him isolated in the garage when kids are around aren't really feasible options...mistakes can always happen, and really I can't imagine him being happy or less anxious if he is shut away whenever there is people over.

Maybe another option you could consider is getting him evaluated and worked on by a dog whisperer. Maybe his anxiety could be treated by medication (long shot I know...but could work possibly, if you don't have reservations about medicating your dog for anxiety).

If you recognise that he is too much dog for you, then the only responsibly and sensible decision you can make is to get him rehoused with someone who can accomodate his needs.
I had a big dog bite me when I was 7, and the same dog bite my sister when she was 10, two years later. A DOG THAT BITES ONCE, WILL BITE AGAIN. No, it's not safe. I would suggest NOT euthenizing him, try to give him to someone else without young kids. The dog that bit us is living with my aunt and uncle, who have another dog but no kids. Both bites where serious, one was interfering with a toy, and one was interfering with food. I don't think it's safe to keep a dangerous dog - we tried that, and things only got worse. =(
The things you mentioned such as crating when company is over are good ideas. It sounds like it is time to invest in dog training. I agree that you have made a commitment and you need to exhuast all options before you try to find him a new home. If he has only bitten twice in the 3 yrs you have had him then I am sure this behavior can be fixed. Try the obvious things and enroll him at obediance school... I am willing to bet that will solve your problems.
accidents happen you cant keep a dog away from children
That is a really tough decision to make. But you are on the right track by crating him when company comes over and telling everyone that when the dog is eating to leave him alone. Did you adopt this dog? Because they should have told you about his behavior before you agreed to take him. If not then I think that you need to really get him involved with a trainer. It may not completely take the aggressive nature away but it can tame it a bit. Once you have gone through all the steps necessary to helping this dog, if he is still showing aggressive behavior than I would seriously consider giving him away. But you would have to tell the shelter or organization about the biting so that they can assess whether or not he would be suitable for adoption. Sometimes the dogs that are aggressive with children do fine placed with families that don't have any. It just depends on the dog. The SPCA runs behavioral tests to see if the dog is ok to be adopted out and to what kind of family it would do best with. Unfortunatly, sometimes they are too aggressive and are a danger to others so they have to be put down. I know that is the last thing you would want but you really have to consider what is best for your children, family and friends. Good luck!
It is possible, but recognize that this is a huge liability and risk as well. All the things you mentioned are good first steps. Make sure all kids (yours and others) know that the dog is NOT to be messed with at all when he's eating (and be sure to feed him in his crate). Also, make sure kids can't walk all over the house with food to perhaps tempt the dog to take it from them.

The first thing to do is to speak to your veterinarian. First of all, the vet can check the dog over for any physical things that might contribute to his anxiety or make it worse. Secondly, your vet can probably recommend a few good trainers in your area to help figure out why the dog is behaving this way and recommend training methods to mitigate some of these issues.

If the dog is food aggressive, it may help to feed him his food one piece at a time (not when the kids are around - at least not at first). Put a few kibbles in the bowl, then let him eat it. Then put a few more in the bowl, and let him eat it. Continue this until he's had his entire ration. The point of this is for the dog to learn that it's okay to have people near him while eating. Depending on the age of your kids, you may want them to participate in this process.

I admire your willingness to work with this to try to keep your dog. So many people out there treat animals as disposable these days that it's sickening. However, recognize that if he does bite someone and it ends up having to be reported, you're risking injury and legal liability and your ability to maintain homeowner's insurance at all. If he does bite someone and it gets reported, he'll likely be taken from you and put down anyway. I wish you the best of luck.
Dalice, have you tried a class or a trainer? He sounds like a good dog with an anxiety problem ... not a dangerous animal.

But it is *so* hard to control for every set of circumstances, and it seems like keeping him locked away when you anticipate company is avoiding the problem, not fixing it.

My sister went through something similar with a high-energy hound dog. She took her pet to puppy college, and while he's still got a lot of spirit, he's now very well behaved around even my (equally high-energy) 3 y.o.

I attached a newsletter article that might be reassuring. Plus, a trainer could help convince your husband that your pet isn't bad, he's just misunderstood.

    Good luck!
Hey Dallas! My husband and I have a 4 year old Boston Terrier and when we brought our baby home from the hospital I thought he would never settle down and get used to her. He was used to it being just the three of us and hardly ever any company. All the sudden there is this new baby and all these people coming over, he has always been a very active dog anyways and he is quite jumpy now every time he hears anything he is jumping up and is barking at the door. After a few months he has gotten used to her and I think he may even be more calm than he was before she came. He has even gotten more used to people being around he gets excited when they get here and want to be pet and then he lays down and doesn't bother us anymore. What I suggest since you don't have a new baby for him to get used to is maybe start taking your dog to the park and get him around other dog's and people get him so accustomed to them that people or dog's are not even anything different to him. If all your dog is used to is you and your family and that is it then he will be very wild when strangers are around. Good Luck!!
My dog's kinda the same way. He's great with our kids, never had a problem (and that's with them crawling all over her), but with other kids she gets nervous and has snapped at my boyfriend's niece and nephew (didn't bite though). She is very protective of her house also. Anyone who comes to the door, she acts like she's going to break the door down and eat them (even the mailman who she sees almost every day). Once adults are in our house, she's fine with them. It's just other kids make her really nervous. Like you, I really don't want to put her down, but am afraid to have other kids over.
My brother in law trains hunting dogs (I hate the man, but this is the one thing he does that I admire.) Because they are hunting dogs, a lot of the time they're not exactly kid-friendly, and his own kids get snapped at by strange dogs pretty often (he brings them home with him and lets them roam the house.) When a dog has snapped, he pretty much gets right on top of the dog and cows it. He's never been bitten. Your husband may be able to enforce the same trick on your dog, since the dog submits to him.

Other than that, I've seen him feed dogs separately and crate dogs apart. They also make canine tranquilizers, a mild sedative might help him calm down if you get enough advance warning of company.
There are meds that calm dogs- and they are expensive. Our beagle is on Prozac because of anxiety- he howls and bays the entire time we are gone, has broken out of 3 different crates and has injured himself in the home trying to get out. Prozac worked for him. He is not a biter though...

Our vet had mentioned drugs to calm dogs and combined with obedience training, it can work. we had rescued a dobereman/shepard mix when I was a teen, and used meds to treat along with behavioral changes and obedience and she was a great dog. The meds helped to change the behavior and the obedience helped to modify her innate behaviors. So- see your vet.

I feel for you. They are a part of the family. NO, you did not allow your dog to become this way- some dogs are born like this. Some are not even known to be like this until a child is nearby- our son was nipped at by my Sis-in-laws dog after trying to feed him by hand. He had never any signs of this before- but he hadn't been around kids.

Good luck and i hope it works out for you and your lucky dog!

Lucky because most would have destroyed him by now- and you are willing to find an answer. KUDOS TO YOU!
I don't know what solution you'll reach. However, I do know that it's likely the dog will actually become more aggressive and territorial as he ages.

He'd best be placed in a home with no children. He sounds like an alpha and he considers children a threat.
I know several people that have dogs which are very protective over their food and have been known to snap if someone touches it. My husband also had a dog when he was a child that you couldn't touch while he was eating. You don't say how hard the dog bit, but I presuming it was just a snap. Most problems with dogs can be worked out.

Firstly, make sure that your dog always has a place he can go to if he feels anxious or threatened by people, and praise him if he retreats to it under these circumstances so that he learns this is the right thing to do.

Secondly, when it comes to food, make sure that you have a routine to feeding him. Put down his food, and when he stops eating take it away. Do not leave it out all day. This will teach him that 'you are his master, and he will only eat when you say so.

It is also a very good idea, that your children become the feeders, so he will learn that they are superior to him. Make him sit and wait until you say he can eat.

Also, if you are going to give him scraps from your plate, make him wait until you have completely finished your meal and are taking your plate to the kitchen before you give him any.

I don't know how well trained your dog is apart from this but making sure that you do not fuss him at all when you come home or in the room, until he is completely calmed down and you are ready to call him to you. This will also reinforce who is boss.

I have 2 huge dogs and they are quite content with having my 15 month old daughter sit and feed them their dinner from a spoon. They even bring their bones to her for her to hold while they chew them!

Another bit of advice is to have your dog castrated if you haven't already done so. Good luck.

Gosh: It seems JR knows everything.
I think its honorable that you want to figure out all of your options before just tossing your dog away. There are somethings to consider before making this decision. First you said he has bitten twice- were the bites big (dangerous) or did he just snip? Did he let go as soon as he was commanded to? How large is the dog? These questions are important because if the dog nearly snipped but didn't break the skin or cause serious damage than yes crating - or having his food dish separate form the family room- and cutting out all rawhide/bone type treats that can make some dogs very territorial is agreat idea(my rottweiler became a completely different animal around his rawhide we just stopped giving it to him and we haven't seen a problem yet). Also if the dog listened to you when you commanded him to let go or to stop than that means the dog knows that you are in control and not him and that is definitely a dog worth keeping. However if at 3 years old he doesn't listen to your commands you are clearly not in control.

After answering those questions if you feel the dog is NOT violent and does understand that you are his boss I would sincerely consider one on one behavior training. Your vet i am sure can recommend some one great for you. It may seem like yet another expense but if you can have your dog relaxed around family- especially children- so you don't feel like you are not allowed to have company- it would be worth it! Plus you get to keep your best friend.
You said that you made a commitment to this dog. But you have a BIGGER commitment to your kids, to keep them safe. You are putting your kids in danger everytime they are near this dog. It has already bitten twice. Yes, you do sound insane. Get rid of this dog before it kills one of your kids, or someone else's.
I too have a shepherd like this, she is protective over my family. Although she doesnt bother children she doesnt like strangers or house guests. I still keep her, she is my love. I just keep her in her own room when guests are over and keep her away from small children at all times, to be safe. I have no small kids though over on a regular basis. If you do have young children, reconsider my advice, as keeping the two seperate will be stressful. People can say to get rid of her, but few know how hard it is to ditch a pet over an issue like that. Also consider behavioral training, and also keep everyone away from her while she is eating, its food aggression and it can be dangerous.
I work in an animal hospital as a vet tech and I have seen some wonerful dogs come in that just so happen to attack kids. Not because they dislike them, but because of little instances like being food aggressive, picking up their toys, petting them too hard, etc. It's not worth it to keep a dog that bites. I'm not telling you that you need to ';prioritize your parenting'; but it's really not worth putting you or your family in harms way. Dog bites are pretty serious business. In my county, if a dog bites a person and it's reported, they owners are obligated to take them in for a Rabies Observation exam twice. If the dog has more than 3 rabies observation exams they usually will start is discuss euthanasia with the owner.

If in the end you eventually want to get rid of your dog, try to find a family without young children and just make them aware of his ';issues';.

Something you can try to do is find a pet behaviorist and have them come to the house and see if he is workable. But he is 3 so it may not even have an effect on him.

And if he is already 3 yrs he is not going to mellow out. If anything when dogs get older they can be more tempermental.

This is a horible situation that your in but by just putting a gate up or seperating him when feeding is not going to protect him from your family.

I know that it's hard because you had him for so long and he's just like a child but biting is not an acceptable behavior or trait to have in a pet.

When I was 9 I was at a friends house and they had an akita. He was the nicest dog in the world. Such a sweetheart, but one day he was at his food bowl and all I did was walk behind him. I didn't touch him or anything, and he turned around and bit me in the face. Now 14 years later, I have scars across my mouth because he was food aggressive. I would hate for this to happen to you.

Good Luck I hope everything works out for you!
well it depends, are you prepared to be rushing one of your kids to the ER after they have had their face torn apart by a big dog? i KNOW you love your dog, and it would be hard to give him up but its just not smart!

if you neeeeeeeddd to keep him, you def need to keep him totally seperate from your kids whenever hes frisky or whenever there is anyone but you home,
    Hey Dalice....

Hmm... I can't help but wonder if it's worth it to ultimately keep him. But, rather than just give up on such a seemingly beautiful dog in all other aspects but this, I'd suggest some obedience schooling. Some place where he can integrated in with other animals and people first in someone else's territory, then his own, and break him of the nervousness and excitement.

Like you said, he's an alpha. And, he looks as your husband as ';pack-leader.'; So, it's of the utmost importance that your husband continues the role of leader, and establishes dominance at all costs over your dog when he shows the FIRST inclination of excitement. Simply put: do not allow him to even focus his attention on the people who come over until he can show a submissive state while in their presence.

With this mentality, he'll learn that he's not running the show, and has to basically ';ask'; you for permission to approach people (be it children, adults, or other animals). Once he asks permission, he'll be careful about what approach he takes. And remember (although hard with children, I know) to make sure the people coming over to not show excitement for him either. Basically act like he's not there until he shows the behavior you want. THEN, acknowlege the dog's presence, and allow for some affectionate interaction between people and pet. This will help him understand that he's not the only one that needs attention, that people are dominant, and that he has to wait his turn.

This'll take a few swings at bat, but the important thing is CONSISTENCE. If you're consistant, and don't give him word in edge-wise, he'll catch on. And, you'll see a whole new doggie!!!

Good luck Dalice - I hope it works out!!!!!!

I have recently adopted a dog from the pound, any advice on helping her adjust to a new life at home?

I have recently adopted a boxer/ sheperd mix from the pound. She is around seven or eight months and extremely skinny. We have her home and she seems to have bonded with us, gets along with our other animals, but is very skiddish, and she wont eat. Does anyone have any advice on helping her adjust?I have recently adopted a dog from the pound, any advice on helping her adjust to a new life at home?
Treat her good, look out for her, create a bond, and such.. :)

Bring her to the vet to make sure she doesn't have any sickness' and such, just like a checkup :)

I'm very proud of you! You adopted not from a pet store, but from a pound! That's so wonderful :)

Your dog will get used to your/her new home, just give her time.

Take care of her, and give her lots and lots of love!!I have recently adopted a dog from the pound, any advice on helping her adjust to a new life at home?
He is still young and that is good. Pound puppies take a little longer to adjust. They have to get to know you.

Both of my dogs came from the pound. They can a few months to really settle in. Just be patient. Be kind to them.

One good way to bond with your dog is to start obedience training. It is good for them to learn that you are the boss and it also teaches them good dog behavior. When you teach them sit and stay, then lay, leave it. Work with new tricks every week or two and praise them. It is good for bonding and it is just wise to train your dog anyway.

Like someone else said, take her to the vet. Make sure she doesn't have worms or anything obstructing his bowl. He could be skinny from not eating well, or there could be a medical problem. Get advice on a nutritious diet to help him gain weight. The vet can help determine a healthy weight goal.

Another good way is to eliminate all table food/snacks/treats and only feed her at meal time. But set a time limit then take up the food after about 15-20 min. She will learn that she needs to eat when she has food down for her. Dogs learn that one fairly quickly when you control the food.
First of all, lots of love and attention! very important. Second, put the new dogs food and water in a seperate place than the other dogs/cats. They need to feel that they have their ';own'; space. Try getting some soft and hard food and mix it up. Maybe it just doesnt like the food you are feeding it. In time, your new dog will adjust to its new surroundings, but to a dog and being in a new place, it needs to feel comfortable. Having its own place to eat and knowing that ';someone'; else wont be invading its food will help. Good luck!
she will eat when she's hungry. dogs won't starve themselves, unless sick. don't coddle her when she acts skittish. ignore that behavior. but make a big deal about her coming up to you; act happy with high voice. if she is extremely skinny, be careful about over feeding her. a lot of people want to fill up the food bowl to force weight on thin dogs. this can lead to food bloat, which can be potentially deadly. small, frequent meals are best.

definitely consult vet if non-eating continues.

    good luck!
Make sure she sees a vet to rule out anything physical. Otherwise just give her time.
Sounds like she probably came from an abusive home and if she spent any length of time in the pound that's no walk in the park either. Also with her being so young she has probably already had a lot of negativity in her short little life. However there are great ways to counteract all of this. Give her some space away from the other animals to have one on one bonding time with you and other family members but individually so as not to overwhelm her. Also if she is not eating do get her checked out by a vet but she may just need time to warm up. In my experience sometimes dogs just won't eat in a new environment for a while but when they get hungry they come around. However with her being so skinny at a young age her system maybe off. What you might try is going to Wal-Mart and getting some supplemental puppy formula and let her have a little in a dish and then put it on her food it will ensure she gets added nutrients she needs but she needs to eat her food too. Also you might try a softer kibble at first rather than some of the harder food brands. But not for too long as it can be bad for their teeth. Make sure she feels loved and a part of the family and consider a kong toy as its a great way to keep them entertained when you are not around. Walks, play, and lazing around watching tv or reading a book in the evenings are a great way to bond too! Good Luck with your new baby!
Yes - great job on adopting from the animal shelter! I am a huge advocate of rescued animals and very outspoken against irresponsible breeders, puppy mills and pet stores. Pound puppies make great pets!

I agree with taking her to the vet for an initial examination and first round shots and a spay if she needs them. The vet will also be able to make sure there is no physical reason she is not eating.

Most likely, her lack of appetite is caused by nervousness. She is in a brand new situation, and she is probably wondering (in her little doggy brain) if this is going to be a temporary stay or a permanent home.

To give her a sense of security, if you haven't already gotten her a crate, I would purchase one. It should be just big enough for her to stand up fully, turn around and lay down on her side. Set the crate up in a quiet area of your home, away from the front door and the television and place two or three washable blankets in the bottom of it. Show her that this is her personal space by throwing a few treats in the back and praising her when she goes in. She will see this as her den, and should retreat there when things get too overwhelming. Do not let your other pets or children bother her while she is in the crate, and never physically remove her, even if it is time to eat or go potty.

We had the same issue when my sister first adopted our dog, Chica. She spent nearly 23 hours out of the day in her crate because she was so nervous, and she jumped at the tiniest noises. She would only come out of the crate to go potty. It took a few months, but now she runs around our house not scared of anything and she eats every meal like she has never tasted food before.

Remember to be very patient and give lots of quiet treats and praise when she behaves the way you want her to. Good luck!
Im guessing based on the skittish factor she might have been abused by previous owners. Let her know shes very special. Cuddle her give her treats feed her the best food for her give her a special Comfy bed. You should even spoil her a bit she deserves it! Play with her daily but also give her space if she needs it. Never poke her nose or do anything unless she misbehaves. Try petting her and telling her shes a good dog. DON'T YELL AT HER.

Resume Or Interview Advice For Someone With No Paid Work Experience?

Just wondering what a person could do to improve their chances if they don't yet have paid work experience.

    Any tips for resumes?

    Any tips for interviews?

And, anything in particular that could make up for it, like good letters of reference or great academic background?Resume Or Interview Advice For Someone With No Paid Work Experience?
Letters of Reference are great, in general, but MUCH better if they are on topic, and not simply along the line of ';Davey is Such a good boy. --signed His Mommy';:D Another helpful thing to consider with References, is do I (or in this case you) know anyone in my personal life, that has a connection to this field.

Example: My mother recently applied for work as a Bus Driver, she needed the references. She had 2 former bosses in/connected to the field she was looking in. For the 3rd reference she used a good friend who used to work for.... the Board of Education. While not a bus driver, her friend was connected to the field.

Think of your life, try to include relavent details. Example, if I was going to get a job at PetSmart, I would mention my volunteer time with the Humane Society, though incredibly brief. I would speak of how rewarding it was:D, and would probably mention my back ground.

Currently live with 3 dogs, 2 cats and a rabbit. Have had, litterally, several dozen parakeets. Several fish, cats, and dogs. I've helped with the care of baby animals, including the afore mentioned, cats, parakeets, squirels, and others.

I would also suggest going to relatively impartial associates you know, and asking them, POLITELY:D, to be relatively brutally honest with you about your good and bad qualities.

My cat had a liquid accident on my carpet, any advice on how I can get the smell out?

I've tried white vinegar and the stuff bought from the store. My cat had a liquid accident on my carpet, any advice on how I can get the smell out?
Hi there...consider Nature's Miracle Just for Cats found worldwide at most pet stores. It's an enzymatic neutralizer which works by breaking down urine proteins by thoroughly soaking the areas affected and allowing to air dry. Repeated applications are necessary for heavily soiled areas.

NM Just for cats product info: http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_d鈥?/a>My cat had a liquid accident on my carpet, any advice on how I can get the smell out?
Pet department at Wal-Mart has some stuff in a spray bottle made just for that
I use a spray bottle with straight Methlyated Spirits in it. It's the only thing that works. Spray the area of the accident, then blot up with paper towel.
Get your rug steamex, most cleaning companies have great deoderizers that can clean out the smell
Try washing it then put APPLE CIDER VINEGAR and then perfume then wash it again and maybe it will help
I use ';Nature's Miracle'; just for cats ... stain %26amp; odor remover when my cat has an accident. It eliminates urine odor with no perfume. Safe use around children and pets. You find this in pet stores and works great.
call a vet or go to petsmart both have products that work at a reasonable price
go to the pet shop from where you got your cat from and ask them what to do to get the smell out
I've had success with baking soda, sprinkled %26amp; brushed in; let it absorb, vacuum %26amp; repeat, as needed. ';Luv-last'; soap, works wonders on stains.
Did he/she pee or throw up? You can buy products for Rug Doctor or other commercial rug cleaners and that should get rid of the smell, if not you will need to get something from Petsmart or Petco.
Only use the white vinegar. If you use chemical products it will attract the cat to go to the toilet there again.
I have had success with a cleaning product with enzymes in it. They ';eat the bacteria and the source of the smell. These usually will keep them from wanting to use the same spot again.

I am looking to start an online business. I've already got the idea of what i'm going to be selling and have even found distributors and looked over the products. You have the right idea here. The only answer in the current climate is an online business where you don't have all the expenses of an offline business and basically you do it from home. You already have a computer and internet access so why not make money from them?

What is your advice for becoming good with math and enjoying doing math?

I love science and have dreamed of working in this field but have always hated working with numbers. This has always held me back. Does anyone know of some way I can deal with this problem? What is your advice for becoming good with math and enjoying doing math?
I think a good idea to get yourself enjoying the subject is to understand some theory and history of mathematics. Charles Seife wrote a (couple of) small, very compelling books on different topics in math. I read all his books (i think) and i'll tell you, they are not tough. Its written for the layman and its easy to find a new appreciation for the subject.

If i can suggest one of his writings its Zero a history- which goes into the history of the number zero- why the greeks banned it, how the indians and arabs developed it, it's implications for calculus and so forth.

p.s. its only like 220 pages, so if your a big reader it should take no time to complete- if not, a chapter a week will do the trick quickly enough.

g'luckWhat is your advice for becoming good with math and enjoying doing math?
hey you can make easier at calculations if you're bored at calculations

see if you have to multiply somthing with 5 then just multiply it with 10 and then divide it with 2 that's all

    for e.g 26*5

    = 26 *10/2

    cancel 26 with 2 = 13

    then multiply 13*10

    which gives 130

    that's all

next if you have problem multiplying large no.s

for e.g to multiply 46 and 45 you could follow this 46*45

    =( 45+1)*45

    =%26gt;2025=45

    = 2070

    you see it's very easy

one imp. thing you need to remeber squares and tables

they are like the back bone of mathematics
First, nobody teaches math. you learn it. Whoever teaches is the one who you should ask questions about the things that are vague in your mind. Second, practice and imagination. You might think of a simple structure and focus on it for hours. one of the most important part of math is not being controversial. Just solve problems.

    Good luck
The reason why most people are not good at math or hate the subject is because they don't know the basics - that used to be my problem too but then i got a math tutor and now look i even have a TC badge in the math category :)
I hate working with numbers too. In grade school Math was by far my worst subject. Then I took Geometry and discovered that there is more to math than numbers . From then on I loved it and went on to get a degree in Math.
The reason why people do not like math is because they do not understand it.

If you take some classes and learn some math, you will grow found of each other.

I need legal advice re: keeping an American who has served time for murder from moving to our Canadian town?

The murder occurred in the States.

The woman was dating a police officer at the time, and used his gun to shoot the victim at a house party.

The victim was the one who was from the small town in Canada.

She has since been released and is off probation, and has met a police officer online who is living in the same small town that the victim was from, and where his family still resides.

She is now attempting to move here and reside as a permanent resident.

Are there any legal steps we can take to keep her from residing here?I need legal advice re: keeping an American who has served time for murder from moving to our Canadian town?
Did the accept her residency application ? It was my understanding that could not happen as a Felon.I need legal advice re: keeping an American who has served time for murder from moving to our Canadian town?
Whether or not she is granted residence is up to what ever agency handles immigration issues in your country.

I would think that a place like Canada with low crime would not allow such a person to immigrate to begin with. You really have no say in their decision I'm afraid.

The basket inside my washer seems to be moving too much when I put in a full load. Any advice?

I try and keep my loads small now but its SO time consuming. Is it fixable for a decent price?

Also we live upstairs so its really bad for our neighbors downstairs although they haven't complained yet but I am sure its really loud down there. The washer bounces a lot!The basket inside my washer seems to be moving too much when I put in a full load. Any advice?
Some washing machines use belts to help steady the drum as it spins. If the problem is worse than it used to be, maybe the belts have become worn or loose and need to be replaced or adjusted. Call a washing machine repair place and give them the make and model of your washing machine and find out what the story is.The basket inside my washer seems to be moving too much when I put in a full load. Any advice?
Run a wash with no clothes and if it bounces, then you have a spring or rubber restrainer broken or loose and if it doesnt

you need to distribute your clothes evenly so it doesnt get out of balance.
U really need to get a new washing machine. Or second choice is, simply put in few clothes %26amp; rotate it with ur hands slightly to see its movement, although the really shaking comes only after it really rotates. But still id suggest to buy a new machine.

Does anyone have advice or prices to fix my pieced ears that are almost about to split?

I don't know the procedure or how much it costs. I live in Illinois and I'm hoping someone can direct me to someone who can help without it costing a ton.

Thanks!Does anyone have advice or prices to fix my pieced ears that are almost about to split?
that has to be fixed by a plastic surgeon and wouldnt be covered under insurace probably a couple thousand dollars, dont wear heavy earrings. either that or you can buy the little discs you put on the front and back of your ears that the earring goes through, they adhere to the ear and stabilize it. im sure if you google topics like, ear lobe earring support or something you can find it, i have seen them in those catalogs like miles kimball and such.

I need your advice on what books should I start reading?

I want start reading more novels and watch less TV so what should I start with?I need your advice on what books should I start reading?
What interest you? If I were to simply start naming titles, you would not like any. If television truly bores you or take up too much of your time, you should read non fiction. Why go from one fantasy to another? You might as well continue to watch t.v. at least it has moving pictures.

Take that time to explore the world through reading. Enlarge your territory. Know that you have truly benefited, when someone is talking about a given topic and you know what he/she is discussing. I too plan to watch less glass screen and read more.I need your advice on what books should I start reading?
Fantasy - The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien

The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien

Children of Hurin by Christopher Tolkien

Harry Potter series by JK Rowling

    Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

Anything from Pratchett and Steven King

    Inheritance Trilogie by Christopher Paolini

Other - The Pelican Brief by John Grisham

The Bourne series by Robert Ludlum

Classics - Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

A farewell to arms by Ernest Hemmingway

The complete works of William Shakespeare

These should be a good place to start!
Well done on taking that decision! Its one that you want regret!

I see me and MB have very similiar tastes in books; she said everything i was gonna say!

You cant go wrong with Stephen King. I suggest trying his collections of short stories to begin with.'; Nightmares and Dreamscapes'; is a great collection, really shows off Kings variety and style, but its all in bite sized chunks so you dont have to concentrate too long. However, most of his novels are hoooooj, but dont be intimidated, once the King has you in his grasp, you just cant put his books down!

And to be honest, hes not THAT scary. I always read last thing at night; if he was, i would have pretty disturbing dreams...

For something lighter, try Douglas Adams's Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (a trilogy in 4 parts). Really hilarious.

Must be the most quoted book on the internet.

(If you'r reading a thread and wondering whats so special about 42, read this and you'll know)

Someone with a very similiar sense of humour is Terry Pratchett, tho he writes fantasy instead of SF. His Discworld series is brilliant, and is the most shoplifted books (after the Bible). It starts off with ';The Colour of Magic';, and hes still writing in this series. Theres something like 35+ books!

Staying with fantasy, give Harry Potter a try. Seriously! The movies arent anything like the books!

And Cakes has an excellent idea: get a library membership. That way you can choose what you like without actually shelling out your hard earned cash...
Become a member of your local library. Browse a while, and soon you will find yourself attracted to certain sections of literature that interest you.
Depends on what you like , do like fiction or non-fiction , Bioaugraphies,etc...

Im almost finish with the Autobiography of Steven Gerrard - good read...and im gonna start with In Black and White - Jake White...
I read everything I can get my hands on so if you are not such a strong or good reader I would advise that you start with fiction, the one I enjoy the most are the Alex Cross stories from James Patterson. Easy writing, gets your attention right from the start and you wont stop reading until you finished the book.

I saw someone said Harry Potter and got thumbs down, but he is right, very easy to read.
    T.D Jakes....Woman Thou Art Loosed...';bestselling book';

';';';Her name is Michelle. As a child she calls her grandma Mama, her mom by her 1st name, and her mothers boyfriends Uncle. She grew up fast with too many man,too many strangers, and too many betrayals.Lost and sentenced to a private hell of abuse, addiction, poverty and crime. Michelle has now given a second life to reclaim her life. But first she has to believe in possible. She has to believe in herself.

    2. E LYNN HARRIS...';WHAT BECOMES OF A BROKEN HEART';

I love this book, i finished reading it within 2 days.

    3. E LYNN. HARRIS.....';I Say A Little Prayer';

A story filled with s..e...x, humor and plenty of plot twists.

    4.E LYNN HARRIS...';If This World Were Mine';

Harris explores the intimacies of friendship with a sensitive eye....

    5. Searching for God Know What'; Donald Miller';

    ';
I would say you shouldn't box yopurself from the start......do a fair mix of fiction and non-fiction......you'll develop a particular interest and take it from there......I hardly read fiction......most of my books are about real people and life situations - biographies, business, politics, philosophy, psychology etc....I spend most of my time writing speeches for business people and politicians.....so I read many books worth reading......

Remember - ';reading is to the mind what excercise is to the body';...you should create your own rhythm....
Hmmmm ..... how are you ever going to finish a book if you have restless legs syndrome? Start with the You magazine, not too much concentration.
    If you like fiction then

    obviously Harry Potter, Inheritance triology

    You could even read biographies
You should read Maya Angelou's '; Hallelujah The Welcome Table. Definitely the best book ever. You will not be sorry.

  • I need some advice about freshwater tank?

I have 2 4 inch telescope eye goldfish. I have a problem with the algae and mulm in my tank. Can i add a Albino Bristlenose Plecostomus since they stay small? Would that be overcrouding my 30 gallon tank. My tank is cycled and has perfect chemistry. Im scared about the tempertature difference.I need some advice about freshwater tank?
What temperature does your tank stay it?.

Bristlenose plecos are tropical and need to be kept over about 70F (21C) at ALL times. Your fancy goldfish can handle cooler tropical temps, so there is some overlap.

While keeping tropicals and goldfish is generally not reccomended, it could be done with those species, but I suggest you get a heater and set it to a low temp.

The brisltenose will eat a lot of algae, but will just convert it to pleco poop, so get a gravel vac as well.

IanI need some advice about freshwater tank?
Plecos should be kept in water above 70-75 degrees.

I believe goldfish require cold water.

Go to your local aquarium or call them and ask them if you can add a pleco to a goldfish tank.

I don't think so but check it out.
i don't think it would be over crowding, but plecos are tropical fish so keeping them in cold water will kill them. it would be better if you just got some snails they also eat algae and can stand cold water

Please give me advice on raising a kitten?

Please give me some insight, advice, and tips on raising a kitten. Please give me advice on raising a kitten?
The best advice that I can give, is that cats should never be punished. Positive reinforcement works best with them. Behaviour that you want to encourage should always be rewarded with food treats, affection and lots of praise. Wherever possible, ignore bad behaviour or try to re-direct their attention to something else. Cats are pretty smart, and are much more inclined to do something if it benefits them in some way.

The Messy Beast web site is a great one for learning about cat behaviour and psychology. (The articles about cat body language and vocal communication, will help you have a better understanding of her.) This web site also has lots of curious information about cats that I haven't seen on other web sites, so it makes for interesting reading if you have spare time.

Based on some of your earlier questions, I think you're already doing a good job raising your kitten as she sounds very happy in your company. Your kitten is lucky to have such a conscientious owner and I hope you have many happy years together ahead of you. Please give me advice on raising a kitten?
it depends on the breed of your kitten
Hard one to answer as its like being a parent to a child, you kinda learn as you go along, as each kitten has such different personalities!! some tips I have learnt from having my first own kitten are:

Start teaching kitten from day one to use kitty litter box (if he is going to be an indoor kitten.

Provide kitten with a scratching post, show him/her how to use it.

Never using spanking as a form of discipline, kittens respond better to a squirt with a water bottle. From day one, let it be known to kitten what is acceptable behaviour and what isnt (eg, clawing curtains etc.) this will avoid any later confusion and discipline problems.

Lastly, give kitten plenty love and affection daily, this will ensure kitten will form a lifetime bond with you. Goodluck!!!!!!
if it's old enough to eat solid food just give him plenty of food and water.. you could even take a bowl of kitten food and put a little warm water in it to make it softer and easier to chew.. but make sure you give him actual kitten food not big cat food cause it has lots of vitamins and stuff that are crucial for their first year
Plenty of play makes a kitten grow attached to you, Im raising my fourth kitten right now and they adore you when you wave a string in front of them (Maybe even attach a little toy to it)

Also spoil them a little, it`s important at the kitten stage for them to have a full trust bond with you so somtimes treats (In moderation)

And use a voice that make you sound familiar, so they know who to go to when they feel stressed or want love.

This may also prevent them from going feral or running away randomly in the future :)
f it has been a while since you have owned a baby pet, then getting a kitten may be a real treat and perhaps a little bit of work. Kitten care is providing your baby cat with all the love, nutrition, safe playing area and vet care he or she needs to be healthy. Here are a few kitten tips to get you started on this grand adventure.

Your kitten’s basic needs are for a nutritionally sound food, fresh, clean water, a safe play environment, human contact, a visit to the local vet, and plenty of loving.

One of the most crucial care tasks that you need to provide for your new kitten is “human contact”. Your kitten needs to interact with humans in a positive way so that she will learn to trust humans and be able to bond with you. If kittens are not bonded with humans within the first 2 weeks of life, they will hiss at them. A litter of kittens needs to be handled by humans on a daily basis to get them used to the touch and feel as well as to the smell of human touch.

Researchers agree that kittens handled on a daily basis in the early weeks improve their learning ability. A mother cat’s presence will reassure the kittens that all is well and that the humans are ok to be around. Otherwise the mother cat would send out a warning signal.

Playtime will help your new kitten become accustomed to his new environment. Playtime will help him to get acquainted with the lay of the room, with other pets, and with other humans in the family.

The kitten needs to be socialized with other humans so it is good to allow others to interact with the new kitten. Children should be taught how to safely handle and play with the kitten before allowing them near the little kitten.

To get your new kitten off to a healthy start be sure to visit the vet as soon as possible after getting your kitten. Kitten vaccinations are important even if the kitten will be a purely indoor cat. Deadly diseases can come into contact with the kitten from human clothing and shoes. Your vet will examine your kitten and help you with any care decisions you need to make.

Your kitten should only eat food that is specially formulated for the special nutritional needs of kittens. Kittens grow rapidly and the need the proper nutrition to support the high energy that kittens have. A kitten will go from infancy to adulthood in just one year. Even though your kitten will look grown up at 26 weeks the kitten is still growing on the inside and still needs special kitten food for the entire first year of life. Kitten food has extra protein, calcium, phosphorus and other nutrients that help the kitten to grow well.

If your kitten is a longhaired cat, it should be groomed daily. Shorthaired kitten need to be groomed 1 to 2 times a week.

The kitten’s litter box needs to be in a quiet place where the kitten will feel secure and have privacy (not a noisy busy area of your home). Be sure not to locate the litter box near any noisy machines like the washer/dryer or refrigerator.

Provide a warm, safe place for it to sleep such as a kitten basket and don’t forget the kitten toys. The most important part of the kitten care is to provide you. The kitten needs you and your attention.

    -

Cats and kittens generally do not overeat, so food should be made available at all times. Feed your kitten a good quality food. This will ensure the kitten is getting the right amount

of vitamins and minerals necessary for growth. Avoid feeding your kitten table scraps. Table scraps will cause a kitten to become overweight, and the kitten may not get the proper nutrition it requires.

Training a kitten to use a litter box is generally easy. Make sure the litter box contains enough litter for digging and burying. About two to three inches is sufficient.

Place the kitten in the litter box and gently guide the kitten's paw through the litter. This will teach the kitten what it is suppose to be doing.

The kitten will instinctively know what to do next. Scoop out any solid waste each day, and distribute any wet litter evenly in the box to allow it to dry.

The litter box should be completely changed each week. Scrub the box using hot, soapy water before adding fresh litter. Scoopable litter is very convenient because the box will not have to be completely changed as often.

If your kitten suddenly stops using the litter box this could be a sign of a bladder infection, and your kitten will need to been seen by a veterinarian for treatment.
Oh,baby kittens are so much fun!! They are so energetic and will keep you busy. You are their mama so just treat them with love and affection and compassion. They will love you back, mine are so use to being just with me that they shy away from other people. I have 10 cats by the way. They go back and forth outside all the time. My 2 little ones are 3 months old, I helped their mama have them so they were use to my touch and voice from birth. But, that is how I have done all of my babies. Have fun and play with your baby, because she won't be a baby long, they sure grow up fast. And I hate not having babies around, they are so much fun. Good Luck to you and happy purring!!!!
Tough question, buddy. If I give you advise, it will differ from stage to stage. Like the rules that apply i infancy changes when the kitten grows up. E-mail me, I'll give you simple, professional advises. Happy parenting!

P coy m8, you will have to be fit as f*ck, stick where you are least when you get out u got some kind of trade, i left years ago and could literally do nothing but fire a rifle or machine gun, not much call for it out here, and you will have to leave some day.
