Ireland is pretty expensive even in recession. I used to live near Dublin but moved west to leitrim. I now live in Dromod, its a tiny picturesque village with a marina. You can hire a boat and ride the shannon to see all the villages along the way. Carrick-on-shannon is supposed to be a great town but im just new here so havnt had a chance to see it yet.
The rail service to the west of Ireland is quite poor and very expensive, the bus is much cheaper and the only difference is an hour. I went to dublin yesterday on the bus it cost 鈧?5 for return(5hour journey in total)and the train costs 鈧?6.50 (4hour journey in total).
The best place would probably be somewhere just outside Dublin so you can get to the city centre and visit museums such as national art gallery, national history museum, natural history museum (loads of dead animals, very cool actually) Museum of Modern art, Kilmanham jail oh and Guinness brewery, I've went on loads of tours in different countries and the Guinness brewery tour was one of the best and i hate the stuff!
Then you could visit the hill of tara, where irish kings were crowned or newgrange, a huge burial site, the curragh isn't far either, you could ride horses there, or go to the races. (im from the curragh myself). its a bit of a dump.
Kildare is very close to Kilkenny and you could see Kilkenny castle, Irelands best example of a castle by far. also speaking of castles you could get the dart in dublin cc out to kiliney and see enya's castle (massive new age artist, top five selling female artists in the world) and bono's house just below her castle, and sorento terrace, home of neil jordan (irelands greatest director - interview with a vampire, crying game, butcher boy) and also van morrison i think or is it eddie ervine? not sure. but kiliney has a great beach, forest walk and beautiful cliffs then next stop is dalkey another beautiful village. then bray, not so nice but very much a seaside town. also by dart theres malahide castle and huge open grounds.I want to know about Ireland. Im planning to see as much as I can and would love some advice on where to start?
Generally start at Dublin, visit the sights in the city. then travel around taking in -
Trim castle co meath
The hill of tara, co meath
Newgrange, county Meath.
Belfast
Giants causeway
Galway %26amp; the Burren.
Limerick
The ring of kerry,
Cork,
Kilkenny.
Wicklow.
then drive up the east coast back to Dublin. (maybe taking a detour through the sally gap in the mountains)
fly to Shannon in Co. Clare for a start. I recommend you visit all of Clare (Kilkee, Lahinch, Spanish Point, The Burren) and then make your way to Co. Kerry and visit Killarney, Dingle etc. I think those two counties provide everything you are looking for.
Discoverireland.ie
Well we wouldn't start from here.
