What are some good job seeking skills/ and or advice?

I found out the other day that my job is being eliminated. Now I need to find a decent job in the accounting field. There isn't much available in my rural area. How do I make myself the best possible canidate when those few oppurtunities come along? What are some good job seeking skills/ and or advice?
Sorry to hear. Job hunting is tough. Just a few tips that might help:

-- Make the best possible resume. Include your key accomplishments and responsibilities in a punchy, eye-catching fashion. Include #s where possible (e.g. managed a balance sheet of $5MM, etc.)

-- Have a friend proofread your resume to ensure there are no errors or inconsistencies.

-- Consider joining a professional organization so you have additional affiliations on the resume. They may also be able to help with job networks.

-- Consider taking an additional course at a local college -- it would help brush up a skill set and also give you access to the career center, which probably has affiliations with local businesses.

-- Research other businesses, both accounting and corporate. Tailor your cover letter and resume to the business so that you stand a better chance of attracting their attention. That should help you get noticed, moreso than using a form letter / resume.

-- Use local opportunities for networking -- events sponsored by the chamber of commerce, etc. You might pick up a lead, especially since rural communities tend to know what's going on where.

-- Consider volunteering your accounting skills to a local not-for-profit organization while you are job hunting. It will add extra experience to your resume, and may be looked upon positively by a prospective employer.

Good luck! What are some good job seeking skills/ and or advice?
